Teen-in-Residence

applications closed

Teen-in-Residence is an opportunity for one teen (13-19 years old) to write a play with the support and mentorship of Theatre Direct.

The selected teen will participate in an eight-month paid residency with biweekly sessions in which they learn about playwriting and receive guidance as they develop a full-length play–maybe their first ever! The residency culminates with a workshop and staged reading of the play by a professional director and actors for a public audience.

Since 2021 this program has supported a Teens-in-Residence each year, resulting in new plays with public performances and even a short film adaptation!

All levels of experience are welcome. A commission is paid to the Teen-in-Residence.

Be our next Teen-in-Residence to be a part of:

EXCERPT FROM THE FOUNTAIN BY ISABELLA AQUINO FELIX

Are you there, God? You better be. I hope you exist. For his sake. If Marcy’s right, if there’s an afterlife where his mom’s waiting to greet him with open arms, maybe it’d be easier, but you’re asking me to let him go… somewhere I will never be able to follow. I must stand here- stand still, as he moves further and further away all because you decided that bliss couldn’t last forever. You know I finally found something worth living for!? The thirteen years this kid’s been alive have brought more meaning to my existence than the last hundred and ten combined. He gets up and starts making his way to the clock. I waited an eternity without even knowing how desperately I needed him and now that I’ve finally found him, of course it’s going to take less than HALF of that time for him to be taken away. And I’ll have to live a whole other eternity without him. He starts spinning the hand of the clock. And another. And another. He’ll be gone and I’ll still be here. He starts spinning faster, with more anger. All the traces of his existence will have faded away and I’ll still be here. I’ll forget the color of his eyes, and I’ll still be here. I’ll forget what his laugh sounds like, and I’ll STILL be here. My son will be nothing but a sun faded photograph and I WILL STILL BE HERE-

THE FOUNDATION SYNOPSIS

200 years ago, the fountain of youth granted four people the gift of immortality, yet, by continuing to live on and outrun death itself, these four discover that there is more to living than simply not dying. By forging connections and building relationships with mortals, these characters come to realize that time is only as valuable as you make it, and that can be beauty in things coming to an end. An imaginative distillation of the human experience, The Fountain serves as a reminder of what makes life worth living.

The Fountain was commissioned by Theatre Direct as part of the 2023/2024 Next Draft program Teen-in-Residence.
